Annie Carruthers is a Philadelphia based soprano known for her rich golden timbre and innate instinct on the stage. She finds herself most suited to extremes. She loves roles that can push her to her comedic limits or really dive into why a character would make choices so far outside of what the audience would easily choose for themselves. The beauty in the process is showing the audience that unorthodox why. Outside of opera, Ms. Carruthers loves making music with small ensembles and audiences where one can have an almost one-on-one experience. The same can be said for the music. It is a different kind of musical intimacy.
Most recently Ms. Carruthers was heard in Morelia, Michoacán (Mexico) with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Michoacán as Mimì in Giacomo Puccini's La bohème under the baton of Maestro Jorge Parodi. Shortly thereafter her contract extended to Belgrade, Serbia where she was fortunate enough to repeat the role with the Orchestra of the Opera of the Serbian National Theater from Novi Sad, Serbia under the baton of Maestro Allen Vladamir Gomez.
Ms. Carruthers has previously been contracted for young artist programs with LAHSOW Austin, The Miami Summer Music Festival and The Curtis Institute of Music. She has also participated in masterclasses with Leone Magiera, Helen Donath, Sylvia Greenberg, Mikael Eliasen, Bradley Moore, Caren Levine, and Jeffrey Buchman.
Her complete roles include Mimì in Puccini's La bohème, Woglinde in Wagner's Das Rheingold, Königin der Nacht in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Gretel in Humperdick's Hänsel und Gretel, The Monitor, an Alms Sister, and a Lay Sister in productions of Puccini's Suor Angelica, L'écureuil in Ravel's L'enfant et les sortilèges, La Ciesca in Puccini's Gianni Schicchi, and A Chambermaid in Menotti's Amelia al ballo. Ms. Carruthers has also covered the role of Despina in Mozart's Così fan tutte.
Annie Carruthers (soprano) received her Professional Studies Graduate Diploma in 2018 at the Cleveland Institute of Music under department head, Dr. Mary Schiller. She also completed her Bachelor of Music in 2016 at the University of Miami under the tutelage of department chair and assistant department chair Dr. Esther Jane Hardenbergh and Dr. Tony Boutté, respectively.
Ms. Carruthers currently resides in Philadelphia where she maintains voice studios in both Philadelphia and Swarthmore.
